SUMMARY:Slow Books\, The Physiology of Taste by Brillat Savarin\, translated by MFK Fisher
DESCRIPTION:Our Slow Books group has reached capacity\, but this is our February selection—join us in spirit and read along. \n \nA delightful and hilarious classic about the joys of the table\, The Physiology of Taste is the most famous book about food ever written. First published in France in 1825 and continuously in print ever since\, Jean Anthelme Brillat-Savarin’s masterpiece is a historical\, philosophical\, and epicurean collection of recipes\, reflections\, and anecdotes on everything and anything gastronomical. Brillat-Savarin—who famously stated “Tell me what you eat and I shall tell you what you are”—shrewdly expounds upon culinary matters that still resonate today\, from the rise of the destination restaurant to matters of diet and weight\, and in M. F. K. Fisher\, whose commentary is both brilliant and amusing\, he has an editor with a sensitivity and wit to match his own.

SUMMARY:Slow Books\, Women in the Kitchen by Anne Willan
DESCRIPTION:Our Slow Books group has reached capacity\, but this is our March selection—join us in spirit and read along. \n \nAnne Willan\, multi-award-winning culinary historian\, cookbook writer\, teacher\, and founder of La Varenne Cooking School in Paris\, explores the lives and work of women cookbook authors whose essential books have defined cooking over the past three hundred years. Beginning with the first published cookbook by Hannah Woolley in 1661 to the early colonial days to the transformative popular works by Fannie Farmer\, Irma Rombauer\, Julia Child\, Edna Lewis\, Marcella Hazan\, and up to Alice Waters working today. \nWillan offers a brief biography of each influential woman\, highlighting her key contributions\, seminal books\, and representative dishes. The book features fifty original recipes—as well as updated versions Willan has tested and modernized for the contemporary kitchen. \nWomen in the Kitchen is an engaging narrative that seamlessly moves through the centuries to help readers understand the ways cookbook authors inspire one another\, that they in part owe their places in history to those who came before them\, and how they forever change the culinary landscape. This “informative and inspiring book is a reminder that the love of delicious food and the care and preparation that goes into it can create a common bond” (Booklist).

SUMMARY:Farm Tour: Stargazer Nursery Agave
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a tour of Stargazer’s agave field! \nLearn about the 30 varieties of agave that are grown at Stargazer and how they are farmed. Agave is a drought-tolerant\, resilient crop and is a good option for California as water becomes more scarce. \nThe tour will be led by owners Adam and Laurie Goldberg\, who will give the history of this 6-year old farm and its long-term plan to make agave spirits. The tour includes a 20-minute walk from the main house to the field (and back again). However\, if you choose not to walk you may stay at the house and enjoy the agaves planted nearby. \nTickets for the tour are $20 per person. \nGet Your Ticket Here\nAbout Stargazer Nursery\nBased in the heart of Sonoma County\, we are breeding and growing over 30 varieties of agave with a goal of identifying extraordinary agaves for spirit production and ornamental use. Our agaves include common spirit varietals\, uncommon ornamentals\, and U.S. natives and domesticates. Our particular focus is breeding and cultivating plants that will thrive in Northern California’s dry\, hot summers and cool\, wet winters. We are expanding our planted acreage slowly each year\, as we experiment with native ground cover\, cover crops\, interplanting\, and various organic and regenerative soil management practices. We use no pesticides or herbicides\, and we clear all weeds by hand. \nWe started our Glen Ellen\, California\, agave farm in 2020 with a mission to make world class\, distinct agave spirits. We strongly believe that our terroir will produce agave spirits of quality\, structure\, and nuance. Our goal is to help grow the knowledge and experience critical for developing an agave spirits industry in California and the United States. We are active members of the California Agave Council\, where Laurie served on the Board for 3 years\, and are working with UC Davis as part of their grant-funded research project on agave farming throughout California.
