SUMMARY:Keeping Traditions As We Move Forward: Sonoma County North Annual Meeting
DESCRIPTION:On world Terra Madre Day\, we will come together virtually to report on the status and health of our chapter\, and to share some of our personal food traditions. Please join us!\nThere is no cost for the meeting but please register so you can receive the Zoom link. \nTerra Madre Day celebrates local food on a global scale. Every December 10th thousands of people around the world organize celebrations of good\, clean and fair food. Terra Madre Day brings together all who share the vision of a food system that supports local economies\, that respects the environment\, biodiversity\, taste\, and tradition. \nFood Traditions\nMost of us have traditional dishes our families prepared when we were young\, and we have evolved our own food traditions as adults. Many of these revolve around holidays\, and others are everyday food that comfort us with reminders of love and community. \nWe believe that keeping these food traditions in our lives helps us to move forward in an increasingly complex world. \nWe invite you to share one of your food traditions with us during the meeting: what is the dish? what memories do you associate with it?

SUMMARY:Slow Books: Clementine in the Kitchen (virtual)
DESCRIPTION:  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWhen “Clémentine in the Kitchen” first appeared in 1943\, it immediately captivated American readers. Written by the artist Samuel Chamberlain under the pen name Phineas Beck\, it recounts the gastronomic adventures of the Beck/Chamberlain family during the decade that their beguiling Burgundian cook Clémentine produced wonderful French meals for them\, both in France and in their New England home in Marblehead\, MA. An appendix contains 125 recipes–classic dishes\, regional specialties\, and much that is useful for special occasions. But the most compelling are plain and old-fashioned. These are the dishes that identify the Clémentine family style\, a style so French\, so civilized\, so knowing in its use of ingredients that it cannot become impractical or ever go out of date: filets de sole au vin blanc\, boeuf à la mode\, endives braisées― trophies of la cuisine bourgeoise that never fail to please. (Amazon)

SUMMARY:Slow Books: "The Omnivore's Dilemma"
DESCRIPTION:On Monday\, February 24\, Slow Books will discuss The Omnivore’s Dilemma: A Natural History of Four Meals by Michael Pollan. We will meet at 5:30 pm at Denaire Nixon’s home in Cloverdale. RSVP required\nWhat should we have for dinner? Ten years ago\, Michael Pollan confronted us with this seemingly simple question and\, with “The Omnivore’s Dilemma\,” his brilliant and eye-opening exploration of our food choices\, demonstrated that how we answer it today may determine not only our health but our survival as a species. In the years since\, Pollan’s revolutionary examination has changed the way Americans think about food. Bringing wide attention to the little-known but vitally important dimensions of food and agriculture in America\, Pollan launched a national conversation about what we eat and the profound consequences that even the simplest everyday food choices have on both ourselves and the natural world. Ten years later\, “The Omnivore’s Dilemma” continues to transform the way Americans think about the politics\, perils\, and pleasures of eating. (Amazon)

SUMMARY:Around the Slow Table with "My Kitchen Year"
DESCRIPTION:Do you like to try new recipes and share the results with a small group of friends? Do you enjoy discussing a dish’s ingredients and process of creating it? If you said YES\, then join us for dinner based on recipes each guest prepares from My Kitchen Year\, by Ruth Reichl.\nLynn Davis’s home in Windsor \nThe address will be sent when you register. \nThis is how it works. Get a copy of My Kitchen Year—and select a few recipes that appeal to you. When you register\, your host will contact you to select which recipe you should prepare and how many people it should feed (a recipe that serves 4-6 people is usually sufficient).\nPlease also bring a beverage to share. \nAt dinner you’ll get to know each other and discuss your experiences preparing your dish. You may also nominate your own favorite cookbook for another Slow Table meal.\nTo register\, please RSVP to slowfoodsonomacountynorth@gmail.com. \nRuth Reichl\, My Kitchen Year\nMy Kitchen Year follows the change of seasons as Ruth Reichl heals through the simple pleasures of cooking after the abrupt closing of Gourmet magazine. Each dish Reichl prepares for herself–and for her family and friends–represents a life’s passion for food: a blistering ma po tofu that shakes Reichl out of the blues; a decadent grilled cheese sandwich that accompanies a rare sighting in the woods around her home; a rhubarb sundae that signals the arrival of spring. Part cookbook\, part personal narrative\, part paean to the household gods\, My Kitchen Year reveals Reichl’s most treasured recipes\, to be shared over and over again with those we love. (Amazon)

SUMMARY:Farm Tour: Lantern Farm
DESCRIPTION:Please join Rebecca Bozzelli for a tour of her Lantern Farm!\nWe will tour through the fields of veggies\, fruit\, and flowers and sample some produce in the fields. Flowers and produce will be available for purchase in the barn.\n26209 River Road\, Cloverdale \n$10 per person. Get your ticket at Brown Paper Tickets \nThe tour will be followed by a no-host lunch at Trading Post Restaurant in town.  \nPlease let us know if you are coming to lunch at slowfoodsonomacountynorth@gmail.com (lunch is not included in the ticket price). \nBoth Lantern Farm & Trading Post have been awarded our Snail of Approval. \nLantern Farm is a mixed produce and flower production in Cloverdale and one of the first Snail of Approval farms in Sonoma County. While Rebecca was looking for land\, her daughter suggested calling the farm Lantern Farm. This seemed like a fine name and the name Lantern Farm was born. A short while later\, and conveniently just down the street\, Rebecca and her family were looking at a potential farm site on River Road that used to be a prune orchard many years ago and has been fallow since. While inspecting the barn\, two old lanterns were hanging on the back wall\, a sure sign that this land was to be Lantern Farm. That was in winter of 2016. The lease was signed in April of that same year\, and Lantern Farm has been growing ever since.

(Amazon)

SUMMARY:Slow Books: Discussion of Diana Abu-Jaber's "The Language of Baklava"
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a Slow Book discussion of The Language of Baklava by Diana Abu-Jaber.\nThere is no charge for this event\, but space is limited. Please RSVP to slowfoodsonomacountynorth@gmail.com. Once we receive your registration\, we will send you additional information and directions to the event.\n  \nWhat Is Slow Books? \nSlow Books is a series of discussions of food-related books written from a variety of perspectives–chef\, critic\, consumer\, producer. Meetings are held every 6 weeks and are open to everyone with an interest in the current book. Books are chosen by the group. Hosting and discussion leader changes for each meeting. \nThe Language of Baklava\, by Diana Abu-Jaber.\nDiana Abu-Jaber’s vibrant\, humorous memoir weaves together delicious food memories that illuminate the two cultures of her childhood—American and Jordanian. Here are stories of being raised by a food-obsessed Jordanian father and tales of Lake Ontario shish kabob cookouts and goat stew feasts under Bedouin tents in the desert. These sensuously evoked repasts\, complete with recipes\, paint a loving and complex portrait of Diana’s impractical\, displaced immigrant father who\, like many an immigrant before him\, cooked to remember the place he came from and to pass that connection on to his children. The Language of Baklava irresistibly invites us to sit down at the table with Diana’s family\, sharing unforgettable meals that turn out to be as much about “grace\, difference\, faith\, love” as they are about food. (Amazon) \n

A veritable cornucopia of beauty and flavor\, the gardens are a core component of our commitment to food and wine education. \nKendall Jackson Gardens \n\n\n\n\n\nTucker Taylor is Jackson Family Wine’s Director of Culinary Gardens. His impressive resume includes the redesign of the culinary garden at The French Laundry and five years of growing specialty produce for Chef Thomas Keller’s restaurants before joining Jackson Family Wines. \nHis gardens provide produce for winery chefs Justin Wangler and Tracey Shepos Cenami and pastry chef Robert Nieto. This trio of talent also collaborated on their 2018 cookbook\, Season\, which was recently awarded Cookbook of the Year by the International Association of Culinary Professionals. \nIn addition\, the garden grows produce for some of the best chefs in the Bay Area–all three 3-Michelin-star restaurants in San Francisco\, as well as Single Thread in Healdsburg–and for those in need through the nonprofit Farm to Pantry\, where Taylor serves on the board. Hosting and discussion leader changes for each meeting. \nThe Food Explorer: The True Adventures of the Globe-Trotting Botanist Who Transformed What America Eats\, by Daniel Stone.\nDavid Fairchild was a late-nineteenth-century botanist who traveled the globe and introduced diverse crops such as avocados\, mangoes\, seedless grapes—and thousands more—to the American plate. \nIn the nineteenth century\, American meals were about subsistence\, not enjoyment. But as a new century approached\, appetites broadened\, and David Fairchild set out in search of foods that would enrich the American farmer and enchant the American eater. \nKale from Croatia\, mangoes from India\, and hops from Bavaria. Peaches from China\, avocados from Chile\, and pomegranates from Malta. Fairchild’s finds weren’t just limited to food: From Egypt he sent back a variety of cotton that revolutionized an industry\, and via Japan he introduced the cherry blossom tree\, forever brightening America’s capital. Along the way\, he was arrested\, caught diseases\, and bargained with island tribes. But his culinary ambition came during a formative era\, and through him\, America transformed into the most diverse food system ever created. (Amazon) \n

Hosting and discussion leader changes for each meeting \nComing to My Senses: The Making of A Counterculture Cook by Alice Waters\nWhen Alice Waters opened the doors of her “little French restaurant” in Berkeley\, California in 1971 at the age of 27\, no one ever anticipated the indelible mark it would leave on the culinary landscape—Alice least of all. Fueled in equal parts by naiveté and a relentless pursuit of beauty and pure flavor\, she turned her passion project into an iconic institution that redefined American cuisine for generations of chefs and food lovers. \nIn “Coming to My Senses\,” Alice retraces the events that led her to 1517 Shattuck Avenue and the tumultuous times that emboldened her to find her own voice as a cook when the prevailing food culture was embracing convenience and uniformity. \nDotted with stories\, recipes\, photographs\, and letters\, “Coming to My Senses” is at once deeply personal and modestly understated\, a quietly revealing look at one woman’s evolution from a rebellious yet impressionable follower to a respected activist who effects social and political change on a global level through the common bond of food. (Amazon)

SUMMARY:Slow Books: Discussion of Jose Andres's "We Fed An Island"
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a Slow Book discussion of We Fed An Island.\nThere is no charge for this event\, but space is limited. Please RSVP to slowfoodsonomacountynorth@gmail.com. Once we receive your registration\, we will send you additional information and directions to the event.\nWhat Is Slow Books? \nSlow Books is a series of discussions of food-related books written from a variety of perspectives–chef\, critic\, consumer\, producer. Meetings are held every 6 weeks and are open to everyone with an interest in the current book. Books are chosen by the group. Hosting and discussion leader changes for each meeting. \n*We Fed An Island by Jose Andres\, with Richard Wolfe*\nThe true story of how a group of chefs fed hundreds of thousands of hungry Americans after Hurricane Maria and touched the hearts of many more. \nChef José Andrés arrived in Puerto Rico four days after Hurricane Maria ripped through the island. Andrés addressed the humanitarian crisis the only way he knew how: by feeding people\, one hot meal at a time. From serving sancocho with his friend José Enrique at Enrique’s ravaged restaurant in San Juan to eventually cooking 100\,000 meals a day at more than a dozen kitchens across the island\, Andrés and his team fed hundreds of thousands of people. \nBased on Andrés’s insider’s take as well as on meetings\, messages\, and conversations he had while in Puerto Rico\, “We Fed an Island” movingly describes how a network of community kitchens activated real change and tells an extraordinary story of hope in the face of disasters both natural and man-made\, offering suggestions for how to address a crisis like this in the future. \nBeyond that\, a portion of the proceeds from the book will be donated to the Chef Relief Network of World Central Kitchen for efforts in Puerto Rico and beyond.
