The grandmother is Swedish\, a retired domestic. The boy is Ethiopian and adopted\, and he will grow up to become the world-renowned chef Marcus Samuelsson. This book is his love letter to food and family in all its manifestations. At his Harlem restaurant\, Red Rooster\, Samuelsson has fulfilled his dream of creating a truly diverse\, multiracial dining room—a place where presidents rub elbows with jazz musicians\, aspiring artists\, and bus drivers. It is a place where an orphan from Ethiopia\, raised in Sweden\, living in America\, can feel at home.

SUMMARY:Slow Books: Discussion of "Climbing the Mango Trees"
DESCRIPTION:Join us for wine\, hors d’oeuvres\, and a Slow Book discussion of Climbing the Mango Trees: A Memoir of a Childhood in India.\nShelley Witten’s home\, Cloverdale (address will be sent upon registration) \nPlease bring an hors d’oeuvre and beverage to share. \nThere is no charge for this event\, but space is limited. Please RSVP to slowfoodsonomacountynorth@gmail.com \nWhat Is Slow Books?\nSlow Books is a series of discussions of food-related books written from a variety of perspectives–chef\, critic\, consumer\, producer. Meetings are held every 6 weeks and are open to everyone with an interest in the current book. Books are chosen by the group. Hosting and discussion leader will change for each meeting. \nClimbing the Mango Trees: A Memoir of a Childhood in India by Madhur Jaffrey\nThe enchanting autobiography of the seven-time James Beard Award-winning cookbook author and acclaimed actress who taught America how to cook Indian food. \nWhether climbing the mango trees in her grandparents’ orchard in Delhi or picnicking in the Himalayan foothills on meatballs stuffed with raisins and mint and tucked into freshly baked spiced pooris\, Madhur Jaffrey has enjoyed a life marked by food. Today these childhood pleasures evoke for her the tastes and textures of growing up. Following Jaffrey from India to Britain\, this memoir is both an enormously appealing account of an unusual childhood and a testament to the power of food to prompt memory\, vividly bringing to life a lost time and place. Also included here are recipes for more than 30 delicious dishes from Jaffrey’s childhood.

If you said YES\, then join us for dinner based on recipes each guest prepares from Ad Hoc at Home\, by Thomas Keller. \nDebbi and Mark Crapeau’s home\, Healdsburg. Address will be sent upon registration. \nLimited to 10 people (including hosts). \nThis is how it works. Get a copy of Ad Hoc at Home and select a recipe that appeals to you. Make enough for 10 people to have a small amount (a recipe that serves 4-6 people should be sufficient). \nPlease also bring a beverage to share. \nAt dinner you’ll get to know each other and discuss your experiences preparing your dish. You may also nominate your own favorite cookbook for another Slow Table meal. \nPlease RSVP to slowfoodsonomacountynorth@gmail.com. After you receive confirmation from us\, tell us what recipe you have chosen. \nThomas Keller shares family-style recipes that you can make any or every day. In the book every home cook has been waiting for\, the revered Thomas Keller turns his imagination to the American comfort foods closest to his heart—flaky biscuits\, chicken pot pies\, New England clam bakes\, and cherry pies so delicious and redolent of childhood that they give Proust’s madeleines a run for their money. In “Ad Hoc at Home”—a cookbook inspired by the menu of his casual restaurant Ad Hoc in Yountville—Keller showcases more than 200 recipes for family-style meals.

SUMMARY:Slow Books: Discussion of Blood\, Bones & Butter
DESCRIPTION:Join us for wine\, hors d’oeuvres\, and a Slow Books discussion!\n195 Westside Road\, Healdsburg\, Marisha Zeffer’s home\nPlease bring an appetizer and beverage to share.\nThere is no charge for this event\, but space is limited. Please RSVP to slowfoodsonomacountynorth@gmail.com \nSlow Books are discussions of food-related books written from a variety of perspectives–chef\, critic\, consumer\, producer. Our plan is to hold Slow Books on a regular basis\, perhaps every 2-3 months. Meetings would be open to everyone with an interest in the current book\, with books chosen by the group. Hosting will change for each meeting\, and the host will lead the discussion. \nThese are our thoughts\, but at our first meeting we want to hear how you would like Slow Books to be structured. \nBlood\, Bones & Butter: The Inadvertent Education of a Reluctant Chef \nby Gabrielle Hamilton\nBefore Gabrielle Hamilton opened her acclaimed New York restaurant Prune\, she spent twenty hard-living years trying to find purpose and meaning in her life. Blood\, Bones & Butter follows an unconventional journey through the many kitchens Hamilton has inhabited through the years: the rural kitchen of her childhood\, where her adored mother stood over the six-burner with an oily wooden spoon in hand; the kitchens of France\, Greece\, and Turkey\, where she was often fed by complete strangers and learned the essence of hospitality; Hamilton’s own kitchen at Prune\, with its many unexpected challenges; and the kitchen of her Italian mother-in-law\, who serves as the link between Hamilton’s idyllic past and her own future family—the result of a prickly marriage that nonetheless yields lasting dividends. By turns epic and intimate\, Gabrielle Hamilton’s story is told with uncommon honesty\, grit\, humor\, and passion.

There is room for only 10 people at the table. \nQuestions? Please call Phyllis at 707/433-1660. \nThis event was inspired by an article in the New York Times describing a cookbook club. We modified that plan to fit our Around the Slow Table format. \n\n
