Around the Slow Table, Cookbook Version: Gjelina

Do you like to try new recipes and share the results with a small group of friends? Do you enjoy discussing a dish’s ingredients and process of creating it? If you said YES, then join us for dinner based on recipes each guest prepares from Gjelina: Cooking from Venice, California, by Travis Lett.

This is how it works. Get a copy of Gjelina—the Sonoma County Library has both hard copies and a Hoopla electronic version, and the host will share her copy. Just select a recipe that appeals to you and make enough for 10 people to have a small amount (a recipe that serves 4-6 people should be sufficient). Kitchen space is limited, so please bring a dish that doesn’t require last-minute preparation. Please also bring a beverage to share. At dinner you’ll get to know each other and discuss your experiences preparing your dish. You may also nominate your own favorite cookbook for another Slow Table meal. Gjelina (silent “G”) is a casual restaurant in Venice, California, that is always packed. (The young chef, Travis Lett, says he wanted it to be the “ideal neighborhood joint.”) Recipes in his cookbook offer complex flavors and include lots of yummy salads and vegetables (like pan-seared romanesco with golden raisins, tahini and sumac) along with pizza (mushrooms and truffle-studded goat cheese), pasta (spaghetti with anchovies, red pepper flakes, garlic and oregano), grains (wild rice with chorizo, walnuts and pomegranate) and—for those up to the challenge—even make-it-yourself sausage.
